Survey, More Employees Working From Abroad

Survey, More Employees Working From Abroad

According to a Yonder survey of 4,000 UK adults published this week, more than one in four employed people are working from abroad for extended periods.

The survey, ordered by the property investment company Castleforge, examined how people’s views of work and vacation had changed since the pandemic.

When asked if their company is now more likely to approve them working away from home for at least a few weeks a year, 27 per cent said yes; among those aged 18 to 34, that number rose to 36 per cent.

One in four workers (25 per cent) said they are now more likely to work remotely for a few days before or after a holiday to extend their stay in a trip location due to the increase of “bleisure,” when business travel and leisure overlap.

As a result, workers are more adaptable in how they complete their work; 27 per cent are now more likely to check their emails while on vacation than they were before the pandemic, and nearly a fifth (17 per cent) are more likely to take part in work calls while away.

Younger people are least inclined to shut off, with 36 per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds now more like to check their work emails than before Covid. Twenty-five per cent of those under 35 are also more inclined to participate in work calls while on vacation.

Interestingly, 39 per cent of individuals who are working from abroad while travelling indicate they would be more likely to select serviced apartments and hotels over Airbnb-style homes—the percentage increases to 47 per cent among people aged 18 to 34 who work away from home.

Thirty-nine per cent of adults and nearly half (47 per cent) of people under 35 who travel for longer than a week say they are now more inclined to search for a larger room with a desk area instead of upscale hotel amenities like a swimming pool.

Castleforge’s founding partner, Michael Kovacs, stated:

“After the epidemic, the distinctions between business and travel as well as between professional travel and vacationing have never been more hazy.”

Axiom Hospitality’s founder and CEO, Jamie Lamb, stated:

“This research reflects the increasing demand for hospitality accommodation that functions both as a place to work and a place to relax, as more people look to extend business stays and work while on holiday. Though it’s important people really ‘switch off’ while on leave, access to high-end working facilities in their holiday accommodation gives people the freedom to be away far longer than was previously possible, to work from anywhere.”

According to the survey, travellers are becoming more conscious of their carbon footprint, with 46 per cent of participants wanting to restrict the number of flights they take a year to lessen their carbon impact.

To take advantage of travelling with their partners, 51 per cent of those who go on business trips are also more inclined to bring their partners along.

It helps workationing employees prioritise tasks and activities, and, notably for the business, managers can monitor what the employee is working on at any time.
